I have rebooted both device and computer and tried Windows Fax & Scan without success
sorry about the screen shots: they show up in my browser; and I can't seem to find an option to make simple attachments
the exact wording from the Print & Scan Doctor after reboot was alongside the HP Twain Scan step and said "The Twain component is being used by another process even after a restart. Remove the software by clicking "uninstall". Reinstall the software with the product CD or by downloading the most current Full Feature software from HP Customer Care (Recommended)"
