Saving Scan on a MAC OS 10.9.1 to a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 all in one operating with a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.1.  I am able to print wirelessly; however, when connected to the printer/scanner via a USB cable I am not able to save the image to my desktop.  When I go to the scanning option, I am able to get an overview scan but when I click on scan to save the image to my desktop I get a message "Done already scanned."  No image is save to my desktop.

I previously was able to do this procedure with no problems.  Today, in desperation, I deleted my printers and tried to load from the disk that I received with the printer/scanner.  At that point I received a message saying that the driver on the disk was not workable with my Operating System 10.9.1.  I went to the HP web site to download a new driver that would be compatable with my current operating system.  It was a bit confusing identifying the correct procedure so I wound up deleting and reloading the driver.  I am able to print with no problem so I have to assume that I have the correct driver and that there is a "bug" with the scanning software.

Any help out there?
