Do you get an error message on the front panel of your Officejet J4550 about 'Scanner failure. Unable to scan, copy, or send a fax'? 

If so, then most likely the issue is hardware related internally in the J4550.  However, please follow the steps in the document linked below to troubleshoot this error message.
