does hp 8600 printer assistant open automatically when a document is placed in scanner glass?

I recently purchased a new HP Pro 8600 multi purpose printer. When I place a document on the scanner glass or Peter the printer assistant does not automatically open. This was a convenient feature on my previous HP printer.

The assistant can easily be obtained by double-clicking the desktop icon but that is a little cumbersome. I wonder if this feature has been eliminated for some reason or I just don't know how to make it work.

Any assistance would certainly be appreciated.
