On my XP pro system I installed the latest versions of the Officejet 6500 e709n drivers etc. I was having problems getting TWAIN to work. Print and Scan Doctor was of no use nor was unisntalling, scrubbing and reinstalling, system restores etc. Finally I just deleted all drivers starting "hp", any HP folders and all HP and Hewlett-Packard entries in the registry and doing a repair install of Windows. After reinstalling from scratch all the scan, fax and printing functions work except when I try to "Manage Scan Shortcuts".
When I click on the manage button I get an error "A required component was not found or was improperly installed. Reinstall the HP Photosmart software that came with the device, and try scanning again.". Extended error information is 8,[(5,0,0)]. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not fix the problem. Print and Scan Doctor finds no problems.
I hooked up my old Officejet Pro L7555 and updated the drivers etc to the latest version. The Manage Scan Shortcuts works perfectly for the 7555.
I spent over a week trying to solve the TWAIN problem and it seemed like with every reinstall more and more things would break and stop functioning. I am not all that eager to waste time uninstalling and reinstalling and only creating more problems.
Is there a solution to this that does not involve futile reinstallations?
