I understand you experience an error when trying to scan. I will do my best to assist you!
First, I would like you to make a photocopy from the printer. If you can, then the issue resides with scanning only. If not, then there could be a hardware issue.
If the copy is successful, please download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. It is a free utility (tool) that helps to resolve generic printing and scanning issues. HP recommends that you run the tool whenever one of these issues occur.
