A year and a month later, the same problem surfaces, this time on Mac OS X 10.6. I have removed the old OfficeJet 4500 from the Printers and Fax section of System Preferences, downloaded the latest software from HP, installed it according to the onscreen directions provided.
I care not a whit for the fax capabilities. I want a machine that will print and scan. The "and", as I am sure you are aware, means that both activities can be conducted successfully. I can print. From the computer, I am "unable to open a scanning session"; from the OfficeJet 4500, I am told there are "No Scan Options".
On the machine which my current machine replaced, there was no problem whatsoever. Unfortunately, a lightning strike rendered that machine unusable, so transferring drivers is out of the question.
No doubt, I am missing a crucial piece of information. Can you supply it to me?
