I understand that you are having an issue scanning with Mavericks V10.9. I will try my best to help you with this issue. I suggest power cycling your network.
How to power cycle network
Follow these steps to reset your HP printer, your wireless router, and your computer.
1.Press the Power button on the HP printer to turn it off.
2.Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the HP printer.
3.Disconnect the power cord from the wireless router.
4.Turn off the computer.
5.Wait 30 seconds.
6.Reconnect the power cord to the wireless router.
7.Wait 30 seconds, or until the router is fully on and ready.
8.Turn the computer back on.
9.Wait for the computer to reload.
10.Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the HP printer.
11.Turn the printer back on.
Then try resetting the Printing System.
Resetting the Printing System in Mac
Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print
Hold down the Option key while clicking the "-" (Remove printer) button.
If no printers are currently added, hold down the Control key while clicking in the box that appears above the "+" (Add printer) button, then choose Reset printing system… from the contextual menu.

You may rather scan with Apples Print and Scan Window, follow the steps below.
- Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
- Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences
- Click Print & Scan .
- Click your printer in the left pane.
- Click Scan , and then click Open Scanner .
- Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to change scan settings.Figure 1: Example of the Show Details scanning screen
- Change any scan settings as necessary, and then click Scan .
OR
- Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
- In the Applications folder or from the Dock, click Image Capture .
- Select your printer from the list. If your printer connects to a network, select it from the Shared list. The details of the scan display.
- If a ' Software for this device is not installed ' message displays after you select your printer, click Install , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
- Click Show Details to view scan settings and options
You may want to use the Airprint driver rather then the HP driver.
